Sikkim University, a Central University, was established under an Act of Parliament of India and came into existence on 2 July 2007. Unlike in other states, there was no Government University in Sikkim. The establishment of a Central University, fully funded by the Government of India, in Sikkim, fulfils a long cherished aspiration of the people of Sikkim and the entire Eastern Himalayan region to have a higher institution of learning.
Sikkim is peaceful, accessible and gifted with a rich natural location. By developing strengths in congruence with the natural and cultural affluence of Sikkim, the University is expected to contribute substantively to the nation building process by mobilizing the rich intellectual heritage of the region. The process would involve galvanizing the academic fervour and creative instincts of the youths and by developing agencies and institutions that will facilitate cross border interactions. Sikkim University endeavors to act as an intellectual base and instrument to realise the larger goals of India’s Look East policy.
The aim is to make Sikkim, the Educational Hub for the whole of Eastern South Asia and South East Asia. The pristine and profusely endowed environment of Sikkim and the adjoining region of Darjeeling will be molded to form the Intellectual Capital of the Eastern Himalayas. Towards such ends, the diverse constituents of Sikkim University shall constantly crave for innovative ideas, broader thinking, wider concepts and solid actions with strong local and regional roots. We aspire towards greater heights and deeper anchors so that we can build a truly universal institution of excellence and repute i.e. ideology neutral, gender neutral, race neutral, geography neutral and religion neutral.
The University attracts students and faculty members, and will continue to do so, from both within India and abroad particularly from the immediate neighbouring countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and South East Asian Countries. This will also supplement the schools and colleges in the region which continue to attract a large number of students from these countries.
