Around 2 per cent people of the population of Uttar Pradesh i.e. 35 lakhs (approximately) are suffering from disability.Keeping in view their special needs and to make them educated and self-dependent,the Govt.of Uttar Pradesh has established "Uttar Pradesh Viklang Uddhar Dr.Shakuntala Misra Vishwavidyalaya."
This is a State-funded University,established in 2008.The 131 acres University campus is located on Mohaan Road,Lucknow.The University is committed to develop as a center of excellence in the field of Higher Education.The Objectives of the University are:To facilitate & promote studies,research & extension work in the emerging areas including rehabilitation courses with focus on visual impairment,hearing impairment,mental retardation, rehabilitation through engineering/technology,community based rehabilitations,rehabilitation psychology,speech & hearing, locomotors and cerebral palsy,autism,spectrum disorder, rehabilitation therapy,vocational counseling rehabilitation, social work/administration etc.through conventional teaching and distance education system;To advance and disseminate learning and knowledge on disability and related issues,including general education by regular and distance mode of education;To develop in the students and research scholars a sense of responsibility,to serve society in the field of disability by developing skills in regard to special education,vocational and general education;
To empower physically challenged students and provide them higher education in an accessible environment alongwith other students;
To hold examinations and confer degrees and other academic distinctions.To do all such things as are incidental,necessary or conducive to the attainment of all or any of the objectives of the University.
