National Law University and Judicial Academy, Guwahati has been approved by University Grants Commission (UGC). This university has been established in 2009. Type of this University is State University.
The National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJA) has been established by the Government of Assam by way of enactment of the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Assam Act No. XXV of 2009). The Act is under a proposed amendment and the word 'School' is being substituted by the word 'University'. It is going to be a torchbearer in the field of legal education and research in the country. NLUJA is the youngest member in the family of the fourteen National Law Schools and Universities established across the country. Hon'ble, the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court is the President (Chancellor) of the Law School. NLUJA is located at Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. Though temporarily it is housed in the North Eastern Judicial Officers Training Institute (NEJOTI) Building in Ulubari area, its permanent campus is coming up at Amingaon near the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, in about a year's time.
National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam will undoubtedly usher a new era in the field of academics in the North Eastern Region. It is pertinent to note that being at the periphery of the country the North Eastern Region is, in many occasions and on many grounds, systematically deprived from the main current of intellectual and enlightenment project of the country. In this respect institution like National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam can play a vital role in ushering an intellectual and moral revolution in the North Eastern Region. It will not only facilitate the much needed academic exposure to the youth of region, at the same time the institution will be instrumental in acclimatizing the youth to their potentialities.
The NLUJAA will promote and make available modern judicial education and research facilities to students and scholars from North East India as well as other states of the country, representing a diverse range of socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. It is expected that in the years to come, students from different states of the region with diverse backgrounds will join NLUJAA, thereby underscoring its truly national character.
